Description and developments of the new project: Techno-Craft booths at the ‘Arts and Crafts’ exhibition
Dear
friends, The COEP alumni and alumni associations are trying to achieve two goals: 1. Develop a strong network of alumni around the world 2. Assist COEP in becoming a world class institute.
Towards that end, the COEP foundation has designed and implemented several big and small projects. Please see the descriptions on http://www.coepfoundation.org. Click on ‘Projects’ tab.
The Techno-Craft booth project is one such project. It is designed to bring alumni and students together while having some fun. By keeping in touch with the students, alumni and faculty in Pune, alumni all over the world will be instantly aware of situations in COEP.
The sponsorship funds are $2500/- for ten Techno-Craft booths ($250/- for each booth). I am hoping each group supporting one booth will include about 10 alumni and 20 students. We can maintain forums for each group. That way we will all be in touch on a regular basis with little effort. We will need several volunteers in Pune itself. I talked to Professor Mandke (COEP alumni association, Pune) and to a couple of students in COEP. Trupti Ranka (astronomy club coordinator) and Kapeesh Saraf (CIED - Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development - coordinator). I also talked to some of my COEP alumni friends who work/own businesses in Pune. I asked if Rs. 10,000/- would be enough to buy raw materials to build some model, about 2- 3 feet in size in 3D. They all seem to agree it is enough. Students can use their own tools. Professor Mandke also suggested that alumni who own businesses can display their products and/or services at this exhibition. Students would love to see the work alumni are doing. This will be a recurring project. The Arts and Crafts Exhibition is arranged every year during the annual social gathering (Regatta) week. We will all brain storm and decide on a central theme. Students will come up with their own creative designs to build a model/gadget fitting the theme. There will be a competition. Alumni will provide a BIG trophy. Winner group’s name will be carved on the trophy. Winners will keep the trophy with them for a year. One trophy will probably last for 25 years.
COEP charitable foundation is involved in several projects at any given time. Please visit http://www.coepfoundation.org. Click on the ‘Projects’ tab. Alumni can support any project they wish.

Meeting briefs 1. COEP director Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe and Prof. A. Sawant showed a video and made a presentation to inform alumni about current developments at COEP http://www.casaengineering.com/coepne/COEPDirectorTalk.pps
2. Thoughts expressed by alumni and visiting professors a. COEP needs over hundred faculty. Alumni may wish to contribute by offering to teach classes in Pune campus or tele classes from anywhere in the world. b. Work on marketing COEP to attract faculty members. This is deemed feasible since the base salary for faculty in COEP is identical to IIT. Additional revenue for faculty and college expected from industry interaction developed between COEP faculty and considerable industry base in Pune. c. Begin publishing small and big articles regularly in news broadcasts. Several alumni who own or are associated with news media will assist. Every year COEP students and faculty win many prestigious awards in national and international competitions. Make this known with great fan fare to the world. d. Basic cleaning and sprucing up of lovely and spectacular buildings on COEP campus will aid in marketing efforts.
3. Alumni involvement in several projects at COEP a. Class room complex: Alumni donate for single classrooms. A plaque will be installed with sponsoring alumni name(s) for every class room. b. Alumni database compilation of 25000+ alumni c. Endowments for chaired professorships in six major departments (raise $150K for each department) d. Continue to sponsor and support smaller projects at COEP such as ‘Telescope making workshop for Astronomy club’, ROBOCON competition for ‘Robot study circle’ and Techo-Craft booths (see below). See pictures from the telescope making workshop here: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/adb291088/TELESCOPEMAKINGWORKSHOP?authkey=7l4U6X5RSuM
And Finally……. North East chapter of COEP charitable foundation is proud to announce that alumni will sponsor ten Techno-Craft booths at Arts and Crafts exhibition in COEP. Each booth will be sponsored by about ten alumni and constructed by a group of about twenty students. See details on this web site and the presentation below. http://www.casaengineering.com/coepne/June9talkAnjali.pps

Concept of a Techno-Craft Booth: COEP students to apply their technical knowledge on real life things on a small scale This will be done in a form of a competition and a team of students will build one booth based on a central theme. Alumni award a BIG trophy. Names of proud alumni sponsors will be displayed at their booth.
About 10 alumni and 20 students in each team. Theme to be voted on by all teams. Total of 100 alumni and 200 students participate and communicate.
Contribute funding for purchasing raw materials and design concepts. Stay in touch. Share pictures of the creative process with the community.
Design and build a model/gadget and display at the booth during Arts and Crafts exhibition.
How money gets collected and disbursed to students? Alumni donate to COEP charitable Foundation in US or Alumni Association in Pune (both tax deductible). Students receive the funds in COEP, Pune from Alumni Association and submit receipts/invoices for the amount.
Eventually, alumni will help make this project self sustaining. Over the next couple of years, alumni may donate about $50,000/-. (Comes to $250/- per alumni per year for two years). This fund, when invested, will generate enough interest to sponsor the booths and reinvest part of it to keep up with inflation. This way, the donated amount is not spent every year but remains intact forever and sponsors this activity forever. Such endowments increase the assets of COEP. |
